What is a digital copier?
What's the
advantage of digital technology?
Why a digital copier may be right for me.
What are the
benefits of wireless printing?
First of all, the term copier needs a little
explanation. G-Is Digital Copiers
are actually Multi Function Products (MFPs), which means they are indeed copiers, but most
can also scan, print and fax. More on that later.
Conventional copiers weve been using for years are
referred to as analog copiers . This helps differentiate them from their newer
digital brothers. Analog copiers worked mechanically through the reflection of light off
your original that was then bounced off mirrors and focused with a lens on a
photo-sensitive drum. This process was referred to as a light-lens technology.
As you might expect, the Digital Printer/Copier do not
use the light-lens system, but rather scan your originals electronically and then
print (copy) them from an electronic file. Printing is accomplished with a laser type
print engine.
For the casual walk-up copier user, the new
Digital Printer/Copier can appear almost identical to its older brother. Here at G-I we feel this
similarity is a benefit. Watch out though, because there are some digital
manufacturers that dont subscribe to this. Their products may not be as user
friendly or familiar to users as the products from companies like Konica Minolta and Toshiba. In
any event, the main differences casual users will notice when they first walk up to a
Digital Printer/Copier is that there are no sorter bins, and also that the
Digital Printer/Copier is finished with your original after just one scan (though it may continue
printing your job for minutes, or even hours). More on that later.
So
What are the advantages of
digital technology?
There are so many answers to this question we thought the
best way to explain it was to just list the most important points one by one.
High dependability because of fewer mechanical (moving)
parts.
It is said that a digital engine (copier) has almost 30%
fewer moving parts in an average print or copy run. In our last point we talked about how
the Digital Printer/Copier gives your original back right away even though it keeps on
running (and running) your job. Thats because of a process we call scan
once, print many. Quite simply, your document is scanned once into memory and
then all the work that the Digital Printer/Copier then does is from memory.
One result of the scan once, print many concept is
the scanner on a Digital Printer/Copier works only a fraction of the time of its analog
brother. (On the old analog copier, every copy it makes requires a scan by the
lens, mirrors, etc., whereas with digital, this only happens once.) Also, if a document
feeder is used to move your originals through the copier, that feeder needs to operate
only a fraction of the time for a scan once, print many engine.
Another result of the scan once, print many concept
is that complete sets are made (and finished) from the electronic memory so mechanical
sorters with moving bins is no longer necessary.
All this adds up to fewer things moving and
happening every time work is produced. The result is increased dependability and
increased uptime.
Modular Design
You can add functionality to a
Digital Printer/Copier
depending on what your office, workgroup, or network requires. Because they are digital,
many of these products have print, fax, and scan options. Modules and functionality can be
added as your business grows or your workgroup changes.
Economical
The operating cost of a
Digital Printer/Copier is
less than a conventional network printer, not to mention the increased
functionality it provides. Another benefit of multi-function is the
possibility of consolidating supplies, service coverage, and training to one piece of
office technology rather than three or four.
MFP = Multi-Functional Product
Ever try using a Digital Copier or MFP as a printer? If you
did, you might find you like it even better. Ever wish you could ask your printer to sort,
staple and make finished sets? You can with a Digital Printer/Copier. Other multi-function features that are saving offices time
& money are scanning, network faxing, internet faxing, mailbox store &
print, and many, many more.
Print Quality
Digital standards today are 600 dpi (dots per inch) and
higher, and since every print is an original, most people like the consistent quality of a
Digital Printer/Copier.
